The best time to visit the Musée Marmottan Monet

Thursday evenings after 6:30 PM, or Tuesday and Wednesday at opening. The museum is quiet almost all the time, but these two moments are when you’ll have the underground Monet room all to yourself. Avoid: spring weekends, the first weeks of a temporary exhibition, and school holiday afternoons. And Mondays, when it’s closed.

The time

On Thursdays, the museum closes at 9 PM, last entry at 8 PM. Between 6:30 PM and 8 PM, the Monet room is all yours. That’s the time I recommend to everyone—and when I go back myself. On weekdays, opening at 10 AM is almost as good: the first visitors stop in the Empire rooms, and you head straight down. The full schedule is on a dedicated page.

The day

Tuesday and Wednesday are the best. Thursday for the evening opening. Friday is fine. Saturday and Sunday get crowded, especially in spring when the Bois de Boulogne attracts all of western Paris and families end their walk at the museum. Closed on Monday.

The season

Winter is the best season for the Marmottan: Giverny is closed, weekends are quiet, Thursday evenings are dark outside, and the underground room feels even deeper. Spring is Giverny’s season—and when the museum is busiest. If you come in spring, choose Thursday evening or opening time, and visit Giverny the same day with the Marmottan + Giverny day trip. The first few weeks of temporary exhibitions, two or three times a year, see the ticket desk busy: that’s the only time when booking online, as explained on should you reserve, saves time.

Our tip

On Thursday evenings in winter, visit Orsay or the Orangerie in the afternoon, then take line 9 to La Muette and the Marmottan from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. It’s the best Monet day Paris offers without leaving the city.
