Opening hours for the Musée Marmottan Monet
Mondays
A good number of messages I receive come from people who arrive on a Monday to find a closed gate, after crossing all of Paris. The museum is closed on Mondays, all year round. Orsay is too. The Orangerie, however, closes on Tuesdays. If your only free day during your stay is a Monday, the Orangerie is the one to aim for, and I mention this on the page Marmottan or Orangerie. A public holiday falling on a Monday is still a Monday.
A regular day
The doors open at 10:00 AM. Between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM, on weekdays, the underground Monet gallery is at its quietest: visitors arriving at opening time linger on the Empire ground floor, and you’ll have the large Water Lilies to yourself for a good fifteen minutes. The last entry is at 5:00 PM, and the museum closes at 6:00 PM. Arriving at 4:45 PM "just for Impression, soleil levant" is possible, but you’ll only have an hour, and the Monet room alone takes nearly that long. The timing is detailed on the visit duration page.
Thursday evening opening
On Thursdays, the museum stays open until 9:00 PM, with the last entry at 8:00 PM. This is the time I recommend to anyone who asks me when to come. After 6:30 PM, families have gone home, tourists are having dinner, and the Passy district isn’t used to going out on Thursdays. The underground gallery then takes on the feel of a private collection you’re visiting by invitation. The price doesn’t change, but what you experience does. Unlike other museums, this evening opening happens all year round, not just during exhibitions.
Public holidays
Three fixed closures: May 1st, December 25th, and January 1st. On other public holidays, the museum opens at its usual hours, and it tends to be busier on those days, as Parisians visit with their families after a walk in the woods. School holidays also make afternoons more crowded. There are no free Sundays, as the museum is private; this is explained on the page is the museum free.
Giverny doesn’t have the same opening hours
Those who combine the museum and Monet's house must consider another schedule: Giverny is only open from late March to November 1st. The Marmottan, however, is open all year round. In winter, it's the only one of the two you can visit, and it's a great season for it. The combined day is described on the Marmottan + Giverny day.

On Thursdays at 6:30 PM, after getting off the metro at La Muette, cross the Ranelagh on foot instead of walking along the Muette roadway: you'll reach the entrance in five minutes, and you'll have two hours in a museum that's emptying out. The route is on getting there by metro.
